Inevitable Change

No Gravatar

1st Fall pictureI have lived long enough to know without a doubt, for certain and for sure, that life changes. If life is too challenging at the moment, or could be that your life today is too boring, just wait a bit. That’s okay sometimes, especially when you are in the midst of a difficult time. But when life is good, it has the audacity to change anyway!

My mind has been on this subject of change for a while now. I suppose many factors have influenced it. There is the changing of the body as it ages. Most recently I have been in contact with my high school buddies, due to the influence of Facebook, and the realization of a 30-year reunion fast approaching. These guys have really changed! Is it that obvious on me too? We are in a season of quick changes, one we watch with some anticipation as the leaves of trees turn, die and fall to the ground. The changing of the hot temperatures to the cooler and the tilting of the earth that causes that change. Creation changes are unending! We just changed the time on our clocks and we are in the beginnings of change in the church’s liturgical calendar. Some of us may be experiencing changes in family situations, jobs, the economy, and the list continues. And at this very moment (of the time of writing), the news of the horrific killings at Ft.Hood, painfully remind us of how quickly life does and will continue to change.

Often times we will hear someone say, “Why can’t things just be different, “or “Why do things always have to change.” Changes can be so unsettling, sometimes causing fear or uncertainties. And in other times we welcome change with jubilation! Life cannot happen without change. It is inevitable.

So the question is not “why changes”, but how to; how to accept, how to handle, how to “weather gracefully”, how NOT to fear them, but instead embrace them.

“Change has a considerable psychological impact on the human mind. To the fearful it is threatening because it means that things may get worse. To the hopeful it is encouraging because things may get better. To the confident it is inspiring because the challenge exists to make things better.” by King Whitney Jr.

Where do you fit? Are you fearful, hopeful, confident? When you choose to tackle life on your own, that is without having developed and matured your faith in God, then changes will always be unsettling. But when God is the foundation in your life, nothing need be feared. You can approach life with confidence because God has assured you of this. (ref. Romans 8:14-17)

“Anyone who listens to my teaching and follows it is wise, like a person who builds a house on solid rock. Though the rain comes in torrents and the floodwaters rise and the winds beat against that house, it won’t collapse because it is built on bedrock. But anyone who hears my teaching and doesn’t obey it is foolish, like a person who builds a house on sand. When the rains and floods come and the winds beat against that house, it will collapse with a mighty crash.”
Matthew 7:24-27

May you have a full life of changes to embrace!

God loves you immensely!

Holy Listening

You’ve probably heard of the saying, “God gave us two ears and one mouth, so we can hear twice as much as we say”. (Source unknown) So my question is, how did we mess that one up?

The Wednesday Bible Study group was introduced last Wed. evening to the material we will be studying,”The Way of Prayer”. It included an exercise titled, “Holy Listening”. Basically, we were to be aware of our listening inabilities and jot down when we wandered off into other thoughts, or wanted to interrupt for one reason or another, when we wanted to “help” the person, give comfort, etc. There were times of silence as each were either prompted to speak or not. I must say, we all did very well. But then, we were aware of our need to listen, the challenge to only listen and the consensus was that it was not an easy task to keep our mouths shut. But an amazing thing happened. We felt the presence of God in those moments of silence and listening. And He knew, as He always does, our needs, our soul?s deepest desires. The soul was seeking the very comfort that is ever before us. We were in prayer in our sharing and listening to one another. This was our beginning of learning prayer with the whole of our being.

Kids really do say the darnest things, don’t they? A couple of weeks ago, out of the blue, Kylie asked me why God made us. As quick as my fear of saying the wrong thing rose, it also subsided as I spat the words out, “Because He has so much love to give, He needed someone to give it to.” Her immediate response was, “God needs us to love Him too, right Nana?” During that conversation, I was in prayer with my whole being. And now as I think back I realize that my whole life can be a prayer to God. I think of the times when my joy is completely full with little girls running around; Kylie, Karlie, Kenslee, Rhilyn and Addison. I am so full of love that I must be in prayer, a prayer that needs no words merely the love pouring from my soul. It is the same when I sit in silence with Rick in the same room, he doing his thing, me doing mine, but being together…in silent relationship. My soul is so full of peace, love and joy that I can think of nothing other than how thankful I am to my Lord who has given me everything.

The presence of God is ever before us, we are just too loud to hear him, feel him, sense him. We have cluttered our lives so that we are unable to respond to his love. The sadder part of this is that we are teaching our children to do the same. How to stop it? How do we reverse it? I have but one answer, and it is not mine at all, but is from the Creator of our soul. “Be still and know that I am God…”
Psalm 46:10

Faith Growing

It was in my pre-teen years when I was certain that Jesus is Lord, that He loved me and I He. I remember going to the track field where my dad sat in the stands awaiting my run at the hurdles. (I was a great hurdle runner.) My desire to live a Christ like life was heavy on my heart, but I needed to talk to dad to get his permission to be baptized. I believed. After some conversation, he, of course, gave his consent.
The fact that I am a very blessed person stays at the forefront of my mind. My siblings and I were fortunate to of been born into a family that loved God. I went to church with mom, dad, sisters, brother, cousins, aunts, uncles, grandmothers and grandfathers. We learned about God and Christ, were active in Sunday school, went on mission trips and never missed when the doors of the church were open for worship. We were also active in our schools, sports, choir, orchestra and band. I was the track star, always had first or second chair as a cellist and sang alto in the school choir. 4 siblings all very active in their school, all made good grades, grew up across the street from Cunningham elementary in a modest 3-bedroom home with fruit trees in the backyard and best friends on the same street. We all believed in Christ and we all do to this day.

Today, I marvel at how blessed a childhood we had. My parents had faith.
From my high school years to my late 20′s I made bad choices. Still, I believed, and I was blessed with a Lord who would not give up on me and parents who loved me. I made it through those tumultuous years and through a series of various incidents I finally made my way to group study of the Word. Since that day I have not stopped and as a result my faith has grown. I have no words to explain the depth of feeling I have for the blessings received when faith growing became a priority in my life.
To believe in something is to accept as true. In this case, that Jesus is the son of God, that he lived and died for you and me. Faith is to have allegiance to duty or person, sincerity of intentions; complete trust and loyalty; a firm belief in something for which there is no proof. We, as humans, believe in many things. Faith, however, is a different story, especially our level of faith.
Jesus spoke much about faith and in particular the amount of faith a person had/has. If you will look just in the book of Matthew for starters you will find Jesus performing miracles according to the amount of faith.

Matthew 9:29 …”according to your faith will it be done to you”
Matthew 13:58 “and he did not do many miracles there because of their lack of faith.”
Matthew 14:31 “you of little faith, why did you doubt?”
Matthew 15:28 “…woman you have great faith! Your request is granted.”
Matthew 17:19-21 “Then the disciples came to Jesus in private and asked, “Why couldn’t we drive it out?” He replied, “Because you have so little faith…”

Let us not be too harsh on these people who had so little faith, after all they were just beginning to learn about Jesus, the Word made flesh. Faith is for growing. We do not develop faith without first believing and second, putting forth time and effort. (Lying in bed on Sunday morning does not grow faith)
I believe that each one of us desires to grow in faith. I believe the only path to that growth is through the study of the Word, the Word made flesh.
How is your faith growing? Is your faith growing? Let us each do a”faith check? and then when we come to the realization that our faith is lacking, decide to do something about it.
Are you ready to begin the awesome journey of faith growing? Take a chance on the mustard seed and see what the Word can do with your faith.
Sunday morning classes are a good place to start, as well as Wednesday evening Bible study.
See you in church!

God loves you immensely!

Tools of Life

Many of you will recognize this theme song from the 1975 movie Mahogony.  It was sung by Diana Ross.

Do You Know Where You\’re Going To?

Do you know where you’re going to?
Do you like the things that life is showing you?
Where are you going to, do you know?
Do you get what you’re hoping for?
When you look behind you there’s no open door,
What are you hoping for, do you know?

As I read those words I can do nothing less than to ponder them and I ask myself, do I know in what direction my life is going?  What do I hope for?
As I look behind me, and see the experiences of life that have shaped and formed me I am joyful for them.   Notice I didn’t say ‘happy’, but joyful, for many of the experiences were rough going and I would not want to experience them again.  And I’ve made mistakes.  But as I look in the mirror to what I have become, and where I am going, I am joyful in the Lord!  He has blessed me with life shaping experiences that have led to lifelong Christian formation.  I can now look behind me to see closed doors and smile inwardly as to the invaluable experiences.

We cannot know the exact direction our life is going, but we can set the course through planning and preparation.  We begin this process very early in life usually with the aid of another (parents, grandparents, siblings, friends, etc.)  They set our course, give us the directions, and then set us free hopefully with all the right tools.

If you were to list the tools you’ve had in life, those you have passed on, what would that list look like?

As some of you are reading this, you may be thinking of your children and asking yourself, what have/did I pass on?  Did I include the very ones that matter the most; the teachings that are for lifelong Christian formation?

What are you hoping for, do you know?

Lifelong Spiritual Formation is the essential tool to the whole of life.  If we have given/received nothing but spiritual directives then we have given/received the love of our Maker and Redeemer, the tools that are life sustaining.

It’s not too late you know.  If you were not given the directions of life, you can still receive them with some effort.  It takes effort to learn the ways of the Lord; it takes effort to teach the ways of the Lord.  But we have a responsibility to ourselves and our younger generations.  We have a responsibility to our Lord and our church family.

Many of us hope for, we yearn for that one thing in life that is solid, strong, never failing and life sustaining.  And it is right in front of you.  Grab it, hold on to it and never let it go.

“For the Word of God is living and active.  Sharper than any double-edged sword, it penetrates even to dividing soul and spirit, joints and marrow; it judges the thoughts and attitudes of the heart.  Nothing in all creation is hidden from God’s sight.  Everything is uncovered and laid bare before the eyes of Him to whom we must give account.”                               Hebrews 4:12-13

Where are you going to, do you know?

Come to the gathering of believers, to your church, with no pretense, with the doors of the past closed, ready to open doors to the future.   Join a Sunday school class and/or the Wednesday evening Bible Studies for that is where lifelong spiritual formation begins.

Receive and give the tools of life and then you will know, you will be assured of hope and direction.

“Growing spiritually is an exciting adventure. As individual and as communities, we change, we are renewed, and we share in renewing God’s creation every day. As Christians who claim life in the power of the Holy Spirit, we live and rejoice in what God already has done, what God is doing, and what God wants for us. Spiritual growth is a lifelong process, and spiritual disciplines are the means by which we continue that process.”

2005-easter-smallerDuring this season of lent we are given the opportunity to experience something other than in our normal everyday lives; to experience something other than ourselves.  We are invited to give up a part of ourselves that we would otherwise be dependent upon, or to cling.  We are invited to experience the other possibilities in our self.  In that process (those 40 days) we begin to suffer over the loss of the familiar.  So often times it is much easier to continue clinging to old ways, to continue dependence on the familiar, to snuggle in the blanket of false security.

In the 10th chapter of the book of Mark, verses 17-22, we read of a man who wanted to experience something other than his self.

“Good Teacher, what must I do to inherit eternal life?”  Jesus said to him, “Why do you call me good?  No one is good but God alone.  You know the commandments: ‘You shall not murder; you shall not commit adultery; you shall not steal; you shall not bear false witness; you shall not defraud; honor your father and mother.’”    He said to him, “Teacher, I have kept all these since my youth.”  Jesus, looking at him, loved him and said, “You lack one thing; go, sell what you own, and give the money to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven; then come, follow me.”  When he heard this, he was shocked and went away grieving, for he had many possessions.”

Jesus, whom loved this man, offered him new life.  But the man first had to give up the part of him that was surely to stand in the way, and he couldn’t do it.  He could not give up what he already knew was not permanent, for what he sought was ETERNAL LIFE.  Did he choose instead to wait for another day, to wait for something else, another offer?  Did he think he could just continue day after day after day to live the familiar?  Did he not really believe in what Jesus offered him?  Maybe he just couldn’t comprehend what Jesus was offering?   The man left in grief and shock, turning his back to Jesus choosing other securities, the familiar. Catching up with Self

No Gravatar

I have been spending entirely too much time on Facebook and Twitter!  It has caused me to neglect my blogging.  I enjoy FB and Twitter but I like to be able to ramble on with my thoughts in a different format too.

So since I wrote last, which looks like middle of March, I have had a birthday.  I don’t particularly feel older, but I do see significant changes in my body happening much too quickly.  The most telling sign is my eyes.  They have rapidly gotten worse.  I use to have excellent vision, then I turned 45 and it began to get worse.  Now 2 years later, I am looking at full time glasses with probable bifocals.  I have an appointment today. Preparing for Life

No Gravatar

Promises of bloom I love Easter for with it comes Spring; new life, warmer temps, flowers blooming, trees coming alive again. I like getting outside playing in the dirt as I prepare my flower beds in order that they grow vibrant and healthy. If I don?t prepare their soil properly, they won?t grow properly, if at all.

How appropriate it is that the season of Lent coincides with Spring for it too involves preparation; the preparation of our lives for the resurrection of our Christ. As we began the Season of Lent, Rick asked me what I would be giving up this year. I told him, “self”. For me, Lent is a time I take to seriously consider my attitude, my actions toward others, my “love level”. In other words, I ask myself how much closer I am to having the spirit of Christ than the previous year and what do I need to do to attain that? Christ was certainly selfless in all he did. It requires a lot of prayer, a lot of self examining, a lot of truth finding about the self. It is an act of preparing in order that my soul grows vibrant and healthy.

Self denial…the deliberate refusal to satisfy ones desires, as a method of disciplining oneself or making it possible to help others. Resurrect…to bring back to life, to bring back to memory or into use Vibrant…full of life and energy As we are nearing Easter and I look back upon this lent season I have to say that I could’ve done better, but I did better than the previous year. Of course, it is all just the beginning and doesn’t end with Easter, for Easter is the time of resurrection.

The next time you?re out working in your yard, ask yourself how you are preparing your life for vibrant growth. Is your life full with the love of Christ or is it lying dormant in need of some care?

God loves you immensely!

A Familiar Song

No Gravatar

This is an old writing of mine from the Spring of 2000. I was reminded of it yesterday when the birds began their beautiful morning ritual.  Creation is something we must take time to enjoy…

It is just before 6:00A.M. on a new morning, a morning set aside for praise of our glorious and sovereign Lord.

It is still dark as I sit out amongst the beauty of His creation, and I hear but only one bird begin the song. I marvel at its sweetness as it announces, with a melody, this new day.

Everything around me is so peaceful, so still, as if the elements of the earth are awaiting an event.

Then, I hear a second bird as if in response to the first. They speak for awhile, just the two of them, one with a tone of authority, the other seemingly submissive.

I look up into the skies noticing the dawn to appear, a picture so perfect, with colors so clear.

The birds, they are all now singing a chorus of great joy.

It’s a song of great praise to the one who has made the red colors arise out of the expanse of the sky.

Look! There he is! In the east of the heavens; thy Savior appears casting rays of light, showing all of God’s might.

I marvel at its excellence as it continues to rise, God placing His Son in the brilliance of the sky.

I remember now, the one lone bird instructing the other of what must happen for man to awaken.

Now, I see the Son in his place, he shines down on me with the warmth of His face.

It is now that I remember from whence he did come, he arose from earth’s darkness showing all of mankind it is Thine will that must be done.

Now, I know why God made the birds, it is to awaken each day to the glory he hath made.
